My lovely husband shared a quote with me that he found in a short story. He thought I could "relate" to it..
Here's the quote:
"Can the torments of hell be worse than what I endured in the days that followed? It seemed likely that I would find out, so near to death did my anguish take me. And surely the experience must be similar, for like infernal fire, grief burns but does not consume; instead, it makes the heart vulnerable to further suffering."
--Ted Chiang
The days, weeks, and early months following Charlie's death were a dark time for me. This quote takes me back to that place of anguish and suffering and describes it pretty accurately. The last part of the quote still rings true -- grief makes the heart vulnerable to further suffering.
My heart is still vulnerable and always will be.

Scars can be fairly tough and protective eventually.
